Thai garments still doing well in US after end of quotas.

May 19--Thailand is among the garment-exporting countries that have been able to survive the onslaught of cheap Chinese products in the United States after the 30-year-old global quota system for garments and textiles was eliminated in January.

Among the main exporters to the world's largest apparel buyer, China has recorded the highest rise since the quotas were eliminated, according to US Department of Commerce statistics (see table).

In the first quarter of this year, Chinese garment exports to the US jumped by 102 percent in volume and 79 percent in value, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total imports to the US …
