WASHINGTON - There is room for compromise with Republicans on taxcuts, but they must be modest and not come at the expense of adequatespending on critical programs, a top White House aide says.
John Podesta, the White House chief of staff, said PresidentClinton hopes to begin serious negotiations with the GOP-led Congresson spending and tax issues after he vetoes the 10-year, $792 billionRepublican tax cut.
