Fed: Debate on stem cell laws too slow: Carr
SYDNEY, Aug 22 AAP - Debate on laws paving the way for embryonic stem cell researchwas too slow and needed to be resolved, NSW Premier Bob Carr said today.
Embryonic stem cell research opponent Ron Boswell was yesterday successful in havingthe proposed laws referred to a committee for investigation in the Senate.
The bill will now be investigated by the Senate's Community Affairs Legislation Committee, while debate in federal parliament is tipped to last at least another two weeks.
But Mr Carr, a strong supporter of embryonic stem cell research, said the timetablefor voting on the laws - which could now stretch to next year - was too slow.
"It is too slow, I think we need to resolve this," he told reporters in Sydney.
"My approach is a realistic one, but also a principled one ...
"I want Australian scientists to be uninhibited in using embryonic stem cells available, surplus to IVF treatment, to help find cures for people who are suffering.
"I want no impediment to those cures being found."
Mr Carr vowed to keep the pressure on over the issue.
"I'm going to keep the pressure on federal parliamentarians, Labor and Coalition, tovote ultimately for the Prime Minister's legislation which was worked out in cooperationwith the premiers," he said.
