NSW: Court told it was not Kanaan who shot at police

An associate of a man accused of the attempted shooting murder of two New South Walespolice officers claims another man fired the shots.

The allegation from WASIM EL ASAAD came during the New South Wales Supreme Court trialof MICHAEL KANAAN.

KANAAN has pleaded NOT guilty to two counts of attempted murder and one of maliciouslydischarging a firearm to prevent his arrest.

The charges relate to a shoot-out with Constable CHRIS PATRECH and former ConstableJOHN FOTOPOULOS at Sydney's White City tennis complex on December 23, 1998.

Const PATRECH was shot twice but Mr FOTOPOULOS escaped injury during the incident.

KANAAN, who is representing himself at his trial, was shot seven times in the incidentand spent months in a wheelchair.

Earlier, the court was told that on the night of the shootings KANAAN was in a carwith three other men when the two police officers followed them until they reached a deadend street in Paddington, in inner city Sydney.

EL ASAAD - one of the men in the car - today said that one man in the car, ALAN ROSSINI,had climbed a fence and fired at police.
